This week is ‘Books You’re Thankful For’. This topic came up two years ago and I don’t think it’s changed for me, so sorry if I’m repeating :

5) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë:

10210This was the first ever classic book I read for fun… luckily I enjoyed it or I never would have done Lit. at uni.

4)  Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare:

1625My second favourite Shakespeare piece and studying it in A-levels was what made me do English at uni.

3) A Midsummer Night Dream by William Shakespeare:

4569906

Another Shakespeare play and this was the first piece of Shakespeare that I enjoyed. It has everything I want in any book- fairies, mythology and made me laugh- what else do you need?

Even though I got called Hippo for a while after I first read it in class – I was playing Hippolyta- I still loved it and I’m thankful for it making me enjoy Shakespeare.

2) Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern:

13611052It was beautifully written despite the plot lacking in places. I’m thankful for it for renewing my love of magic and bringing out my nostalgic side.

1)Sweep / Wicca series by Cate Tiernan:

333937

These books are my favourite books of all time, not because they’re brilliantly written or anything but because they were the first books I ever really enjoyed. Before high school I hated books. The only time I read was when you had to read in front of the class or someone at school, and being an incredibly anxious person I am it always led to a stuttering mess.

The series had everything that I could have wanted in a book- witches, magic, drama and a character I loved and connected to. I love these books and I am forever thankful to them for making me love reading and giving me someone I could relate to as a teenager.

I actually have a video review, which I made a while ago:

This week is ‘Nostalgic Book Boyfriends/Girlfriends’. Characters you swooned over when you were younger :

5) Snape from Harry Potter series:

Image result for SNAPE

I’m pushing it a bit here but I needed a fifth. I love Snape  and – as my fanfiction reading habits show – have no problem seeing him in a romantic way.

4) Jesse from The Mediator series:

234907

He was attractive and sweet. So what if he was a ghost and dies over 100 years ago.

3) Hunter from Wicca / Sweep series:

333923

Favourite book series of all time and I think Hunter was part of the reason for it

2) The Doctor from Doctor Who:

Image result for 10th doctorI definitely swooned over the Doctor, mainly 10.

1) Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer :

My first ever crush. He’s passionate, perceptive, writes poems and love’s bitch,… I might still be swooning.

Top 5 Wednesday: Problematic Faves

This week is ‘Problematic Faves’:

5) Snape in the Harry Potter series:

Image result for SNAPE

I love Snape but even I know he was in the wrong for a lot of the story, from how he treated Harry, Neville… well all the Gryffindors really, to him being a Death Eater (yes he was a spy but that wasn’t his intention when he joined).

4) Killian Jones in Once Upon A Time:

Image result for killian jonesI think Hook is the only reason I watched OUAT for as long as I did… but he killed his father and just left a child with no one (his brother no less), let alone the others he killed and betrayed.

3) Celaena in Throne of Glass series:

13519397

She’s an assassin, need I say more

2) Arya in Game of Thrones:

Image result for arya stark

Don’t get me wrong, I love her but she straight up murdered I don’t know how many people and stole some of their faces.

1) Klaus in The Vampire Diaries/ The Originals :

Image result for KLAUS

May have a minor crush on him but like with most people on this list he has killed a lot of people, more than all the others put together. He’s tortured people, tried to strangle the pregnant girl carrying his child, daggered his siblings I don’t know how many times… he’s not the nicest of people.

Top 5 Wednesday: Genre Benders

Top 5 Wednesday is a Booktube group which makes book related top five lists. I’m not very regular with my Youtube videos so I’ll post them here instead when I can.

For more info on the group looks here on the Goodreads page:

This week is ‘Genre Benders’. Books that defy genre or are hard to place:

5) The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman:

15783514

I had no idea what to do for number 5 so just looked at a Goodreads list of Genre Bending books and picked the first thing on there that I read.

4) Smoke by Dan Vyleta:

30332296This book is set in a kind of alternate 1800’s, where smoke pours out of people’s bodies whenever they commit a sin.

I really loved this book, especially the ending. It almost felt like n Victorian novel that happens to have the twist of smoke, while also being an investigation story, a look into life at a boys boarding school and the difference between the aristocracy and the working class. TBH it kind of reminded me of a Thomas Hardy book in places.

3) Monstrous Little Voices by various authors:

28271040

It’s a mix between an anthology, a continuation of Shakespeare’s plays, magic and alternate realities.

It’s kind of like the Shakespeare version of Penny Dreadful or Once Upon a Time.

2) City of Circles by Jess Richards:

35050106Mix between a story of magic, a romance and a story about grief – though I’d argue more about grief than anything else.

It’s about a tightrope walker as she learns to live after her parents death.

1) Alice Takes Back Wonderland by David D. Hammons:

22590207

Kind of like Once Upon A Time, it mixes up fairy tales and other stories but with a focus on Alice in Wonderland.

This was the first thing that came to mind for this topic because it goes through so many genres. Each place has a different genre like Wonderland is a ‘normal’ dystopian future, Neverland a steampunk island, mobster Snow White and robotic Sleeping Beauty. It’s an interesting mix.

This week is ‘Books Featuring Vampires’. I could have picked any supernatural creature and it was between vampires and the fae. The only deciding factor for me is that I wanted to mention a book that I read recently. Also, there are a couple of shows in here too that I love:

This week is ‘Books Featuring Witches ’. Despite everything, I don’t generally read books about fictional witches, which is weird since I love magic and am a Wiccan. So, other than my top two, the books just happen to have witches in them:
