Top 5 Wednesday: Top 5 Books of the Year
Top 5 Wednesday is a Booktube group which makes book related top five lists. I’m not very regular with my Youtube videos so I’ll post them here instead when I can.
For more info on the group looks here on the Goodreads page:
This week is ‘Top 5 Books of the Year’. I’m going to take this as books that came out this year, just because. Also it narrows it down a lot for me. So here:
5) Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard:
Ok, this came out earlier this year and I read the first chapter in July. I finally got to read the whole thing this month when the publisher gave me a copy to review – Self promoting but here:-
I more or less liked this book. It was fun to read and nicely written, it just uses elements that have already been used a lot.
4) Demon Road by Derek Landy:
Another one that I read the first chapter of in July – thank you YALC. Like Red Queen I just found it ok. There were a few good descriptions and I liked bits of it but all together it was just euh for me. For more info here’s my review:-
3) Night Owls by Jenn Bennett:
I don’t know why I liked this book, it’s not my usual genre- it’s the only one on the list that has no magic in it- and it’s a bit cutesy towards the end… but I liked it. I will admit I only read it because I got a free ARC copy at YALC – YALC strikes again on this list, last time I promise. It was short and sweet and inspired me to want to draw anatomical drawings – inspiration didn’t last long after my failed attempts. My main criticism is that I prefer the American title and cover, rather than the UK- The Anatomical Shape of a Heart.
2) Alice Takes Back Wonderland by David D. Hammons:
Not much I can say about this book without going into a full out review, which I have here:-
Just a really fun book of retellings sort of like Once Upon A Time. Great mix of genres and stories and I enjoyed how everything meshed together.
1) The Reluctant Sacrifice by Kerr-Ann Dempster:
Just loved this book. It was interesting, a fun characters – one that I fully admit to being in love with- there’s magic and fascinating dynamics. Reminds me a bit of the Buffy episode Inca Mummy Princess or even Prophecy Girl. I’ll admit the ending was a bit cutesy but I don’t care. Also, despite the story being finished – really don’t want a sequel- there’s room for the story to be extended, there were bits mentioned that could make a great story on its own, probably good for fanfiction writers. Anyway , great book and will be adding a review soon.
